Addiction Professional Designations for practioners working in the field of Addiction Treatment
ASAM | The ASAM certificate is recognized throughout the world as signifying excellence in the practice of Addiction Medicine. Must hold a valid Medical License in US or Canada. |
BRI I | Board Registered Interventionist 1 Credential issued by the Association of Interventionists Credentialing Board AISCB. Hold a current ICRC NAADAC certification and or a State recognized certification license in a counseling related field. Minimum of two years supervised work experience conducting interventions |
BRI II | Board Registered Interventionist 2 Be or meet the requirements for BRI 1.Plus an additional three years of supervised work experience conducting interventions and demonstrate experience with addictions other than to alcohol and drugs, i.e gambling, food, sex, etc. Credential issued by the Association of Interventionists Credentialing Board AISCB. |
CAAP I | Certified Associate Addiction ProfessionalI requires a bachelors degree in social services or related studies and 2,000 hours of supervised experience. The next higher level of certification is the CAAP II. |
CAAP II | Certified Associate Addiction Professional II, meets the requirements of a CAP but has not yet taken the grueling oral examination. |
CAC | 1. Certified Alcoholism Counselor Massachusetts , 2. Certified Addiction Counselor Louisiana, 2005. |
CADC I | Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor I.Certification for Alcohol and Drug Counselors requires a minimum of a bachelors degree or the equivalent, substantial training in alcohol and drug education, and 4,000 hours of supervised counseling experience. |
CADC II | Certification for Alcohol and Drug Counselors requires a minimum of a bachelors degree or the equivalent, substantial training in alcohol and drug education, and 4,000 hours of supervised counseling experience. |
CAP | 1. Certified Addiction Professional In Florida this requires a masters degree, certain credits in pharmacology, and 6,000 hours of supervised training in chemical dependency. see also CAAPI and CAAPII |
CAS | Certified Addiction Specialist |
CATC | Certified Addiction Treatment Counselor California, a certification offered by the California Association for AlcoholDrug Educators for persons who complete accredited collegeuniversity programs. |
CCS | Certified Clinical Supervisor |
CET I | That the therapist possess at least a bachelors degree from an accredited university in a field relevant to hisher area of practice. That the therapist have Psychodrama andor Experiential Therapy training. That after initial certification the therapist agree to and provide evidence of 5 hours a year approved Psychodrama, Experiential Therapy or Addictions training |
CET II | In addition to satisfactorily meeting all requirements for Level I above, requires at least a masters degree from an accredited university in a field relevant to the members areas of practice. |
CSAC | Certified Substance Abuse Counselor. Provide alcohol abuse counseling, drug abuse counseling, combined alcohol and drug abuse counseling, counseling to families with substance abusing members, and counseling to children of alcoholics. |
D.O. | Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine have the same medical school training and licensing requirements as MDs, with an emphasis on the neuromuskuloskeletal system. Some DO psychiatrists perform osteopathic manipulation techniques OMT in conjunction with prescribing medication and providing traditional therapy. American Osteopathic Association |
DOT SAP |
The Substance Abuse Professional SAP is a person who evaluates employees who have violated a DOT drug and alcohol program regulation and makes recommendations concerning education, treatment, followup testing, and aftercare. |
LAC | Licensed Addiction Counselor: Holds an academic degree, has completed a oneyear formalized training program in chemical dependency counseling and has had supervised clinical work experience. |
LADC | Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor |
LASW | Licensed Advanced Social Worker is for social workers who practice in schools, hospitals, agencies, etc. Also see: LICSW. Washington State licensure information from Gayle Clelland. Advanced social work means the application of social work theory and methods including emotional and biopsychosocial assessment, psychotherapy under the supervision of a licensed independent clinical social worker, case management, consultation, advocacy, counseling, and community organization. |
LCDC | Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor |
LCPC | Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor States of Maryland, Montana, Idaho, Kansas and Nevada In Idaho, an LPC must complete additional hours of supervised experience and show proficiency in diagnostic evaluation before being granted the LCPC. Illinois and Kansas also have a two tiered credential LPC and LCPC. |
LCSW | Licensed Social Worker |
LICSW | Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker. These are masterslevel clinical social workers with advanced experience who have met state licensing requirements. |
LMFT | Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. |
LMHC | Minimum of an earned masters degree from a mental health counseling program accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs CACREP that consists of at least 60 semester hours or 80 quarter hours of clinical and didactic instruction, including a course in human sexuality and a course in substance abuse. |

M.D. | Medical Doctor |
MA | Master of Arts a university graduate degree requiring one or two years of additional study above the requirements for a bachelors degree BA or BS. Concentration is in fine art, humanities, social science, theology, or other liberal arts area. |
MAC | In addition to holding the NCC credential, the requirements for the MAC credential include: Documentation of a minimum of 12 semester hours of graduate coursework in the area of addictions which may include coursework in group and or marriage and family counseling up to six semester hours OR 500 CE hours specifically in addictions. Three years supervised experience as an addictions counselor at no fewer than 20 hours per week. Two of the three years must have been completed after the counseling masters degree was conferred. A passing score on the Examination for Master Addictions Counselors EMAC. |
MS | Master of Science A university graduate degree requiring one or two years of additional study above the requirements for a bachelors degree BA or BS. |
MSN | Master of Science in Nursing A university graduate degree requiring one or two years of additional study above the requirements for a bachelors degree in nursing BA or BS. |
MSSW | Master of Science in Social Work |
MSW | Masters of Social Work A university graduate degree usually requiring two years of additional study above the requirements for a bachelors degree BA or BS. |
MT-BC | Music Therapist Board Certified, a credential awarded by the Certification Board for Music Therapists. |
NCC | The National Board of Certified Counselors NBCC issues the Nationally Certified Counselor certification. The NBCC certifies counselors who have passed the National Counselor Examination for Licensure NCE. NCPYST | NAA Pregistered Certified Psychoanalytic Psychotherapists. The initials can be used by members in good standing who are certified by a psychoanalytic institute as psychoanalytic psychotherapists. The use of these initials NCPsyA NCPsyT facilitate public identification of psychoanalysis as a separate discipline as well as identify members as certified. |
PCC-S | Professional Clinical Counselor license with Supervisory status Ohio |
PH.D | This is a professional who has a doctoral level degree in a psychological field and is licensed to practice by their respective state. |
PSY.D | This is a professional who has a doctorallevel degree in a psychological field and is licensed to practice by their respective state. |
