In In the early 1970s, it was determined that the profession of addiction counseling needed guidelines to govern itself. At this time, the profession was not viewed favorably nor taken seriously. NAADAC, the Association of Addiction Professionals, determined that in order to assist the profession to better its identity, standards of ethics should be developed. Those standards still govern our profession and our practice today. NAADAC has recently updated its Code of Ethics to reflect the current ethical climate. This presentation will address the new national ethics standards for addiction professionals.

Topics of discussion will include:

self-disclosure, scopes of practice, confidentiality regulations, mandatory reporting and many other adjunct issues will be addressed. At the end of the live presentation, participants will be able to ask questions of the presenters and receive immediate answers.

Presenters: Anne Hatcher, EdD, CAC III, NCAC II, is Co-Director of the Center for Addiction Studies at Metropolitan State College of Denver. Since joining the full time faculty in 1988, she has designed courses and developed protocols at the local, state and national level. Dr. Hatcher was a member of the NAADAC Certification Commission for six years. Kathryn Benson, LADC, NCAC II, has worked in the counseling field since 1972. She maintains a clinical consulting practice in Nashville, TN, where she provides clinical and program development and supervision services. She has spent many years providing creative, high-energy national trainings for counseling professionals in areas including, but not limited to: professional ethics, clinical supervision, DOT drug testing rules and regulations and licensure preparation.
