Challenges in Identifying and Addressing Co-occurring Substance Use and Personality Disorders
Description: There are a multitude of challenges in counseling persons with substance use disorders, not the least of which is the challenge of personality disorders. Oftentimes these terms are thrown around lightly, especially Borderline and Antisocial. As addictions professionals we need to take these disorders seriously as a necessary component of the treatment plan. It is estimated that between 11 and 23% of Americans are affected with personality disorders, and 50 to 60% of those with a SUD also have one or more personality disorders. If not identified correctly and addressed as part of the treatment process, outcomes will be poor. This webinar will give an overview of personality disorders, cultural issues of each, and suggested assessment and treatment approaches for the addictions professional.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Describe personality disorders
- Define cultural issues that should be considered during assessment of PD
- Identify affective treatment approaches for co-occurring SUD and PD
- Describe steps for self-care for the professional when treating this population
