Description

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, however, as the clinical use of opioids has risen over the past two decades, opioid-associated harm has risen in parallel.  Researchers, educators, practitioners and policy makers are all intensively working to address this challenges.  Working together, can we finally find means in the early twenty-first century to use opioids for healing without harm?

Opioids for Chronic Pain:  Deconstructing the Evidence
 Russell Portenoy, MD

Dr. Russell Portenoy is chairman of the Department of Pain Medicine and Palliative Care and the Gerald J. Friedman Chair in Pain Medicine and Palliative Care at Beth Israel Medical Center, New York. He is the Chief Medical Officer of MJHS Hospice and Palliative Care and Professor of Neurology and Anesthesiology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Dr. Portenoy is past-president of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine and past-president of the American Pain Society. He previously chaired the American Board of Hospice and Palliative Medicine and served on the Council of the International Association for the Study of Pain. He is a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award and the National Leadership Award of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine, has received both the Wilbert Fordyce Award for Lifetime Excellence in Clinical Investigation and the Distinguished Service Award from the American Pain Society, and was given the Founder’s Award by the American Academy of Pain Medicine.

Dr. Portenoy has been Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management for more than two decades, coedits the Oxford Textbook of Palliative Medicine, and is editor for the palliative care section of The Oncologist. He serves on numerous other editorial boards. He has written, co-authored, or edited 21 books and more than 525 papers and book chapters on topics in pain and symptom management, opioid pharmacotherapy and palliative care.

 Opioid Prescribing: SAMHSA's Approach to Helping
Clinicians with What They Need to Know
Elinore McCance-Katz, MD

Dr. Elinore McCance-Katz is the first chief medical officer appointed at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Previously at the University of California San Francisco, Dr. McCance-Katz was a Professor of Psychiatry, and was the State Medical Director for the California Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs. She is board-certified in General Psychiatry and Addiction Psychiatry and is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry. Dr. McCance-Katz has been working in the field of addiction medicine for 22 years as a clinician, teacher and clinical researcher. Her specialty areas include pharmacotherapy for substance use disorders, clinical pharmacology of drugs of abuse, drug interactions, cocaine/alcohol/opioid medications development, and co-occurring HIV disease and addiction. Her clinical interests are in the treatment of those with co-occurring substance use disorders, infectious diseases including HIV and HCV and mental illness. She is also interested in the treatment of those with chronic pain who have developed problems with opioid analgesic overuse/misuse often with co-occurring mental illness.

Prior to her appointment, Dr. McCance-Katz was the Medical Director of the Physicians’ Clinical Support System for Buprenorphine and the Prescribers’ Clinical Support System for Opioid Therapies which are Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT)/SAMHSA-sponsored national training and peer support programs for physicians and clinicians treating patients with clinical need for opioid medications. She has also helped to develop educational curricula to assist with the integration of substance use screening, brief intervention and treatment referral into primary care settings through an SBIRT grant to UCSF.

Internationally, Dr. McCance-Katz has been part of a World Health Organization (WHO) committee to develop guidelines on the treatment of drug users living with HIV/AIDS and has reviewed and contributed to WHO white papers on methadone and buprenorphine treatment of opiate addiction. She participated in the President’s Emergency Program for AIDS Relief(PEPFAR) where she  assisted with the development of methadone maintenance programs in Vietnam. Most recently, Dr. McCance-Katz has conducted studies of drug-drug interactions between opioids or alcohol and HIV therapeutics through research studies funded by NIAAA/NIH and drug interactions between disulfiram and HIV therapeutics funded by NIDA/NIH.

Dr. Cannon attended medical school at the University of Utah and his Residency in pediatrics at the University of Utah/Primary Children’s Medical Center. He is the Medical Director for the Primary Care Clinical Program at Intermountain Healthcare where he oversees the development, implementation and coordination of system wide primary care initiatives at Intermountain. Dr. Cannon chaired the development of Intermountain’s Chronic Pain Care Process Model for primary care physicians when it was developed in 2010. Dr. Cannon is a Board Certified pediatrician.
