ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP:

This workshop aims to describe the co-occurring problems of mental illness and substance misuse in Veterans and provide education related to Best Practices for assessment and treatment with this population.  Comorbid substance misuse conservatively affects up to one-third of Veterans with a Severe Mental Illness (SMI) such as Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder, and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.  The needs of these Veterans are often complex and pose specific challenges in traditional mental health settings.  As community mental health agencies are becoming increasingly involved in the care and support of Veterans it is critical for mental health providers to be informed in the assessment, triage, and treatment of these conditions.
