Course 1: Understanding Addiction & Recovery
Instructor: Jim Knorp
1:00 - 4:15 PM
We now know that there are many ways that people find and stay in long-term recovery. It is important to let people know there is no ONE right way into recovery. Another way to say this is to say there is no wrong door into recovery as long as the person feels that it’s right and working for them and they are experi-encing success. And, if one pathway doesn’t work, just like other illnesses, we want to encourage people to find the pathway that works for them.
At the conclusion of this training, participants should:
1) Be aware of what the pathways to recovery are;
2) Have an idea of how the brain is affected by alcohol and drugs;
3) Identify some of the symptoms of addiction;
4) Understand the importance of the Stages of Change.

Course 2: The Face of Drug Abuse
In America: Ugly & Getting Uglier
October 4, 2011
9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Instructor: Paul Doering
The non-medical use of medicinal drugs and other chemicals is a direct or indirect cause of many encounters between patients and those who work or volunteer in the addictions field. Often the drugs being abused go by a variety of slang names which do not immediately identify the agent involved or its corre-sponding toxicity. It is important for the practitioner to stay abreast of the current drugs being used and the various conditions under which they are taken. There is an ever-changing landscape of drugs abuse and just when you think you’ve heard everything, along comes some new drugs or new way of using an old drug. Have you ever heard of K2, also known as Spice? Would you recognize it if you saw it? The purpose of this presentation is to discuss current use patterns of drugs among the recreational drug users and their toxic properties.
Hot Topics: Slang names for drugs, usefulness/shortcomings of urine drug screening, “street drugsâ€.
Focus Areas: Counseling, Addictions, Nursing/Medical, Prevention, Criminal Justice, Clinical
Total CEUs: 3 CEU Hours (DUI CEUs Pending)
Note: A Boxed Lunch is included with your registration for this course.
