Preceded by an Ethics workshop (Oct 9) presented by Dr. Pamela Harmell, the 4th Western Conference on Behavioral Health and Addictive Disorders will focus on The Process Addictions, also known as Behavioral Addictions. Recently, the American Society of Addiction Medicine broadened its definition of Addiction to include behavioral process addictions based on new brain science. The Emerging Neurobiology of Resilience: Implications for Psychotherapeutic Interventions

In the aftermath of traumatic and victimizing experiences, some 75% of individuals will be impacted, but they go onto evidence resilience, and in some instances, Post Traumatic Growth. In contrast, 25% of trauma- exposed individuals experience persistent adjustment problems, PTSD and related comorbid psychiatric disorders. This presentation will consider what distinguishes these two groups and examine the neurobiology of resilience. It will consider the active behavioral, neural and hormonal basis of resilience and the implications for conducting psychotherapy.

Emphasis will be placed on the understanding of current research from such disciplines as neurobiology, neuropsychology and attachment theory. Practical treatment techniques translated from the research will give participants hands-on skills.
