Summary/Abstract
Howard Shaffer has been on the forefront of addiction treatment and research for almost 40 years. This article deals with the definition of addiction, research and the syndrome model of addiction in the upcoming DSM V.

Dr. Shaffer has been a principal or co-principal investigator on a wide variety of research projects related to addiction, including the Harvard Project on Gambling and Health, and a federal research project focusing on psychiatric co-morbidity among multiple DUI offenders. He is the past editor of the Journal of Gambling Studies and the Psychology of Addictive Behaviors. Click attached PDF File to read article
