Description

What is the Walk?

To celebrate recovery from substance use disorder, build community awareness that recovery works and educate on the different pathways to recovery, and to help fundraise for local non-profit recovery resources. With increased awareness comes a hopeful expansion of effective services for those in need, and a shattering of the stigma associated with substance use disorder.

To accomplish this mission, a group of volunteers from the community will host a fundraising/awareness walk on June 11, 2016 at Payson Park from 8:30am -12pm.   All the proceeds from the event will be donated to recovery organizations that are dedicated to helping those on their recovery journey through peer-to-peer recovery activities, fellowship, fitness, stress managment, and various 12 step programs.

Together, we can do great things and send a strong and meaningful message to all those whose lives have been impacted by substance abuse disorder.

Who benefits from the Walk?

Portland Recovery Community Center

The Portland Recovery Community Center stands as a safe haven for people from EVERY addiction recovery pathway and for our recovery allies.

PRCC has had incredible growth. Year one they saw 10,437 visits, year 2  18,162 visits, year 3 28,580 visits and this year will be over 37,000 visits.

Help ME Recover

Help ME Recover is a community coalition comprised of engaged community members with voices from multiple areas of the community and with different backgrounds and experiences that supports individuals in sbustance use disorder recovery.

Funds raised from the Walk, help further the recovery movement.

Where is the Walk?

The Walk starts and ends at Payson Park, Baxter Blvd. Portland Maine.

Registration, speakers and general gathering will be at the "Triangle" of Payson Park.  This is the grassed triangle area closest to Baxter Blvd.

The Walk will be around the walking path of Baxter Blvd.

PARKING:

Parking is permitted anywhere in Payson Park as well as a designated area for the Walk which is just left of the triangle space.

Why should I Walk?

Substance use disorder touches all of our lives in some way – some of us directly, some of us indirectly, and some of us, simply by virtue of sharing a community with people whose lives are being destroyed by the disease.

If you want to send a message of hope to those currently struggling with substance use disorder…if you want to show your pride and gratitude as an substance use survivor…if you want to honor the memory of a loved one who succumbed to the disease…or, if you simply want to make a contribution toward a stronger, healthier, safer community…then sign up to Step Into Action!

How Can I Help?
