Description: This webinar provides clinical training on delivering the Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) model in adolescent settings. The training will provide a brief introduction on SBIRT. The main foci will be administering, scoring, and interpreting the CRAFFT screening instrument; delivering brief intervention using motivational interviewing techniques and Boston University’s Brief Negotiated Interview (BNI); scheduling follow-up brief interventions when appropriate; and making referrals to treatment. This training is appropriate for individuals who will be conducting screenings and brief interventions with adolescents as well as for directors and supervisors who will be overseeing SBIRT delivery. It is suggested that this training be followed with motivational interviewing training, role-plays, and feedback using the BNI checklist prior to implementation.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
- Administer and score the CRAFFT instrument
- Use the CRAFFT screening score to determine what level of intervention to provide
- Provide brief intervention using the Brief Negotiated Interview
- Understand when to schedule adolescents for follow-up appointments regarding their substance use
Presenters:
- Brett Harris, DrPH is a Research Scientist specializing in adolescent screening and early intervention at the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS). Dr. Harris has led screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment (SBIRT) implementation projects in school-based health centers (SBHCs) and currently co-leads a nationwide adolescent SBIRT learning community and serves on the SBIRT advisory committee for the National School-Based Health Alliance. Dr. Harris recently completed her dissertation on SBHC program directors’ and clinicians’ attitudes and perceptions which facilitate and impede the adoption and implementation of SBIRT in SBHCs and is using the results to inform a strategy to expand and sustain SBIRT in the network of New York State SBHCs. Dr. Harris earned her Doctor of Public Health with a concentration in Health Policy, Management, and Behavior from the University at Albany in 2014, her Master of Public Health from the University at Albany in 2008, and her Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Social Policy from Cornell University in 2006.
- Shirley DeStafeno, MA is the Project Manager of the New York Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (NYSBIRT I) grant for NYS Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS). She has been a Project Manager and Evaluator for several federally-funded grants for over twenty-five years, with prior experience in clinical services and management information systems. She is an OASAS-certified Motivational Interviewing Trainer. In her previous role, she was the Project Evaluator for FASD Initiative Project, Project CHOICES; she developed and conducted the training and Motivational Interviewing sessions. She holds a Bachelor of Arts Degrees from the College of St. Rose (Albany, NY), a Master of Arts from Hood College (Frederick, Maryland), and an Advanced Certificate from Georgetown University in Organizational Development.
