Description:
Suicide is a serious public health problem that takes an enormous toll on society. There are far more suicides each year than homicides. In fact, from 2008 - 2010, the number of suicides has been more than twice that of homicides. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that more than 40,000 people died by suicide in 2012. After cancer and heart disease, suicide now accounts for more years of life lost than any other cause of death. This webinar will discuss current efforts to work with suicide survivors including review of objectives in the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention and the National Research Agenda for Suicide Prevention. Webinar participants will learn: 1) best practices in helping attempt survivors; 2) how to help attempt survivors identify who they can talk to about their attempt with and who not to; 3) learn how to encourage survivors to incorporate the “survivor” identify and move toward a “thriver” identity; and 4) learn how to understand and differentiate between the needs and wants of attempt survivors.
