Description

The team at Novel Tech Ethics is committed to public discussion on the ethics issues that affect us all. In collaboration with many diverse groups and stakeholders, we run public events that bring the debate to a wider audience, and contribute to building ethics leadership in our communities. Rapid neuroscientific advances in recent years have led to a myriad of brain interventions such as neuro-diagnostics with brain-imaging, deep-brain stimulation, and psychopharmaceuticals. But these interventions are significantly different than other medical interventions, given their potential to alter our sense of self, our mental functions, consciousness and personal identity. This mini ethics symposium will feature three distinct neuroethics issues. Uses of the brain-reading metaphor: Early modern science to neuroscience Presenter - Tim Krahn Cognitive enchancement: Some current ethical issues Presenter: Simon Outram, Ph.D The self in psychiatry: Patients and their self-understandings in the age of neuroscience Presenter: Serife Tekin Ph.D
