Professor of Psychiatry Emeritus, Dr. Thomas Szasz, has been challenging his own profession for decades, calling psychiatry a "pseudoscience." Szasz has probably "...done more than any other man to alert the American public to the potential dangers of an excessively psychiatrized society," according to Edwin Shurr in the Atlantic Monthly.
His book, The Myth of Mental Illness (1961) questioned the legitimacy of his field and provided intellectual grounding for generations of critics, patient advocates, and antipsychiatry activists, making enemies of many fellow doctors.
